Okay, here’s my blog about how I remade the Patek Philippe Calatrava 5088/100P-001.

So, I’ve been itching to get my hands dirty with a new project, and what better way to do it than by recreating a classic? I decided to tackle the Patek Philippe Calatrava 5088/100P-001. You know, the one on the official flagship store that just screams elegance. It’s a beauty, but way out of my budget. So, I thought, “Why not try to remake it myself?”

First things first, I needed to gather all my materials. This was a bit of a scavenger hunt. I went online, browsed through some sites that sell PC components and consumer electronics. You know the usual places to find parts. Ended up ordering a bunch of stuff. While I was waiting for those, I spent some time just looking at pictures of the watch online. I mean, really studying them. I tried to look at every detail of the original, and think about what materials I could use to remake it.

Once my parts arrived, I started with the most important part – the movement. This is the heart of the watch, and let me tell you, it’s complicated! I spent days, maybe even weeks, just fiddling with tiny gears and springs. There were times I wanted to throw it all out the window, especially since I had never done this before! But I kept at it. The original has all of these intricate engravings. I tried my best to copy them, but man, it’s hard. I found a place nearby that had some engraving tools I could use, that helped a lot, but still it wasn’t easy to replicate the real deal.

The casing was another beast. I used some basic metal and tried to shape it like the original. That took forever. I found a restaurant nearby that actually had a great area where I could work, surprisingly. Good food too, so I’d go there to eat and work on the casing. It was a good spot to focus. I also ordered some leather for the strap online. I wanted something that felt close to the original, but cheaper.

Then came the dial and hands. This was more about painting and being precise. I went through a few drafts before I was happy with how it looked. Had to do a lot of little touch-ups. Finally, I put it all together. It took forever, but seeing the finished product was worth it. It’s not perfect, and it’s definitely not a real Patek Philippe, but it’s my Patek Philippe. I’m pretty proud of how it turned out. I even wore it to a little get-together, and my buddy, who’s into watches, thought it was pretty cool. He did notice some differences when he looked close, but still said it was impressive for a homemade project.

This whole thing was a real learning experience. If I were to do it again, I’d probably try a simpler design first. I jumped into the deep end with this one, haha. But hey, no regrets! I hope this inspired some of you to start your own projects. It’s tough, but super rewarding. If you want more movement in your life, try to remake a watch! Just don’t give up when things get tricky.
